Anxiety + Depression: Management Protocol
This protocol explores the potential mood-enhancing and neurological benefits of HBOT, aiming to support traditional treatment methods such as psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. It should be emphasized that HBOT for anxiety and depression is experimental and should be used as part of a holistic mental health treatment plan.
It is bet for individuals diagnosed with anxiety and/or depression who are seeking complementary therapies alongside conventional treatments, and who are cleared for HBOT by their healthcare providers.
MOA (Mechanism of Action)
Neurogenesis: Stimulates the growth of new neurons, which may contribute to improved brain function and emotional regulation.
Angiogenesis: Increases the formation of new blood vessels, improving blood flow and oxygen delivery to brain tissues, which can enhance mood and cognitive function.
Cytokine Reduction: Reduces inflammation that may be linked to mood disorders. Chronic inflammation has been associated with depression and anxiety.

ALL THE DETAILS
-
Treatment Protocol:
Pressure Level: 1.3 to 1.5 ATA gradually increased to 2.0 ATA using Supplemental Oxygen
Session Length: Typical sessions last about 60-90 minutes.Frequency:
Intensive Phase: 3-5 sessions per week for a total of 20-30 sessions, depending on the severity and response.
Modified: 2-3 per week.Maintenance Phase: After the initial intensive phase, sessions can be reduced to 1- 2 times per week or as needed based on therapeutic outcomes.
-
PROTOCOL
Acclimation Phase
3 sessions/week for 2 weeks at 1.5 ATA for first 3–4 sessions, then gradually increase to 1.7 – 2.0 ATA.
Performance Phase
4 – 5 sessions/week for 4 – 6 weeks
Focus on building neuroefficiency and recovery; best results seen around session 20 – 30.
MAINTENANCE
Maintenance Phase
1 – 2 sessions/week Ongoing
Maintain brain performance, stress resilience, and recovery during school year or sports season.
-
Hydration: Encourage proper hydration before and after sessions to maximize oxygen delivery and support overall health.
Nutrition: Advice on a balanced diet rich in nutrients that support brain health, such as omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins.
Environmental Adjustments: HBOT should be integrated with ongoing psychological therapies, medications, and lifestyle interventions like mindfulness, exercise, and stress management techniques.
-
Improved Brain Oxygenation: Enhanced oxygen levels can improve brain metabolism and potentially correct imbalances associated with mood disorders.
Support for Neuroplasticity: Increased oxygenation may facilitate neuroplastic changes, crucial for recovery in neurobiological pathways affected by anxiety and depression.
-
Red Light Therapy (RLT) before Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) can be helpful because it primes the body’s cells and circulation, making them more receptive to the oxygen boost that comes in HBOT.
RLT duration before HBOT: 10–15 minutes full body, or 5–10 minutes targeted.
Frequency: 3–5x/week or combined with HBOT sessions
Timing: Ideally right before the HBOT session so vasodilation and mitochondrial activation are at peak.
Wavelengths:
660 nm (red) – skin rejuvenation, inflammation
850 nm (near-infrared)– deeper tissue, muscle, brain, jointsHere’s why:
1. Increases Blood Flow Before Oxygen Loading
2. Stimulates Mitochondrial Energy Production
3. Reduces Pre-existing Inflammation
4. Enhances Nitric Oxide (NO) Release
5. Prepares the Nervous System- Relaxing -
Pre-Session Recommendations
Light, balanced meal 1–2 hours prior
No alcohol or heavy caffeine same day
Hydration encouraged
Ear clearing check
Do not use if you have any of the following:
Uncontrolled seizure disorders
Active upper respiratory infections or sinus congestion
Uncontrolled hypertension
Untreated pneumothorax
Claustrophobia (without desensitization or sedation)
Clients should start hyperbaric oxygen therapy with a protocol package for comprehensive initial treatment, then continue with a maintenance membership for ongoing support and benefits.
Individual outcomes from the therapy may vary. Each person’s response to treatment depends on a variety of factors including their unique health condition and overall wellness. While our experienced staff is committed to providing personalized support and guidance throughout the therapy process, we do not guarantee the cure of any medical condition.
Our goal is to assist clients in achieving relief from symptoms and to support overall healing and recovery. Clients should consult with their healthcare provider before beginning treatment and disclose any health concerns during their sessions.
By participating in hyperbaric oxygen therapy at ELEVATE SONOMA, clients acknowledge understanding of these terms.
If you're unsure where to begin, we suggest scheduling a free consultation with one of our team members in-person or virtually. This allows us to understand your needs and goals and tailor a protocol specifically for you.
